Cursive began as a practical answer to a physical problem: quill pens scratch and splatter when lifted, so scribes learned to keep the nib on the page and let letters flow into one another. By the 19th century, that practicality had been refined into art. Platt Rogers Spencer's Spencerian script — the flowing hand behind the original Coca-Cola and Ford wordmarks — became America's business standard, taught through meticulous drills of ovals and push-pull strokes.

The Palmer Method simplified Spencerian for the typewriter era, trading ornament for speed and arm movement; later, D'Nealian and Zaner-Bloser became the classroom standards most adults remember from worksheets. Then, within a single generation, cursive nearly vanished: as keyboards took over, many schools dropped it from the curriculum entirely.

What followed was an unexpected renaissance. Tattoo culture rediscovered script lettering in the 2000s, wedding stationery made calligraphy fashionable again, and Instagram turned cursive bios into a micro-genre of self-expression. Cursive vs. calligraphy vs. handwriting vs. script

These four words get used interchangeably, and in casual conversation that is fine — but they describe different things. Cursive is any writing where letters join within a word; it is a property of the writing, not a style. Handwriting is simply whatever your own hand produces, neat or messy. Calligraphy is the deliberate art of beautiful letterforms, usually drawn slowly with attention to each stroke — more like drawing than writing. And script is the typographic umbrella: any typeface modeled on handwriting or calligraphy is a "script font".
