The Four Families of Blackletter: Textura, Fraktur, Schwabacher and Rotunda

Blackletter is not a single style but a family of related scripts that dominated European writing and printing from the 12th to the 16th century. Calligraphers and type historians divide it into four major families, and knowing them apart instantly tells you why two 'gothic' fonts can look completely different.

When you use this generator, the Unicode fraktur styles and fonts like UnifrakturMaguntia and UnifrakturCook come from the Fraktur tradition; the sharp, densely packed looks belong to Textura; and rounded display blackletters such as Almendra descend from the Rotunda branch. Picking the right family is the difference between a design that reads as medieval England, Renaissance Germany, or a modern metal band.

• Textura (Textualis). The most formal and angular family — tall, narrow letters built from dense vertical strokes with diamond-shaped feet. This is the hand of the Gutenberg Bible and of high-status medieval manuscripts, and it is what most people picture as 'Old English'. Its texture is so tight that a full page looks almost woven, which is where the name comes from.

• Fraktur. A 16th-century German evolution that breaks Textura's rigid walls with curved, calligraphic flourishes — note the sweeping tails on letters like A, H and Z. Fraktur became the standard type of German-speaking Europe and stayed in everyday use there well into the 20th century, which is why it still signals 'German' as much as 'gothic'.

• Schwabacher. The rounder, friendlier cousin that appeared in late-15th-century Swabia. It keeps the broken-stroke skeleton but opens up the curves, making it far more readable than Textura. Early printed books and pamphlets favored it, and modern 'soft blackletter' display fonts trace back to it.

• Rotunda. The southern, Italian answer to blackletter: it rounds the vertical strokes and loosens the rhythm, sitting halfway between gothic and humanist writing. If Textura is a fortress wall, Rotunda is an archway — the ancestor of many decorative gothic fonts that feel ornate rather than severe.

Gothic vs. Old English vs. Blackletter — What's the Difference?

In everyday search terms these three words are used almost interchangeably, and that is fine — but they are not exact synonyms. 'Blackletter' is the umbrella term for the whole family of dense, broken-stroke medieval scripts. 'Gothic' is the casual name for the same tradition (scholars also call it 'gothic script' or 'gothic minuscule'), though in design shops it often broadens to anything dark and dramatic, including horror and metal lettering that has no medieval roots at all.

'Old English' is the loosest term of all. It refers specifically to the Textura-flavored blackletter popularized in England — the style of newspaper mastheads like The New York Times and of countless tattoo studios. It has nothing to do with the Old English language; nobody in the year 900 wrote like this. So: every Old English font is blackletter, every blackletter font is 'gothic' in the loose sense — but only the angular, Textura-descended ones are truly Old English.
